Happy Fall!!! The leaves haven’t begun to change yet, but we’re already seeing the effects of fall – artists are bringing out their new work every day, and the gallery is filling to the rim!
We’re really excited to be expanding our photo gallery on our website this fall, and we encourage you all to keep an eye on your favorite artists’ work! Don’t see them? Shoot us an e-mail, and we’ll add them right away! Recently, we added gift registry to our site, and we always offer gift certificates for any amount. If you have a piece of art (or several!) in mind and want your friends and family to shop at Hummingbird Lane for you this holiday season, just let us know, and we will help you out! We offer lots of great services like gift wrapping, gift delivery (to certain areas), shipping and loads of beautiful, one of a kind pieces. If you need us to add photos to the website, would like to register for gifts, or you want to use the website for your holiday shopping, we’re here to assist. Please let us know, and we’ll be happy to overcome any obstacles. If you are thinking of specialty pieces for the holidays, you may want to place your orders soon, or come by. Artists often need at least 4 weeks turnaround time to work on special orders. If an order comes in too late, we will provide you with a certificate to give as your gift, but if you are making special plans for your gift giving, please keep in mind that artists struggle to meet deadlines. It’s always best to plan ahead! In addition, several of the artists offer special gifts for corporate needs. We have lots of ideas, so keep Hummingbird Lane Art Gallery in mind when choosing the perfect gift for employees, clients and customers. The temperature sure is changing here in Dahlonega. We have had a wonderful summer, and fall is kicking itself off here in the mountains. The air just plain feels good! I hope that if you’re nearby, you’re able to come and visit us soon! The artists have been bringing new work in every day, and the gallery is filled to the rim with gift items for Christmas, new work from our current artists, and some new artists have even made their way into the gallery. Jack Anthony’s show will be featured throughout the month of October, and more information is listed below. We have a lot of events planned for October, so take a minute and see if there’s anything you’d like to include on your next visit! September 27, 2008 – Appalachian Jam on the Square September 28, 2008 – Six Gap Bicycle Ride! For more information, visit Cycle North Georgia. The energy of a bike race weekend is awesome! October 3, 2008 – Final “First Friday Concert” in the park. Russo & Noe will finish the series with a night of music featuring songs of the Rat Pack. Las Vegas!! Don’t forget to stop by the gallery and pick up your unglazed wine cup! October 4, 2008 – Kicks off Dahlonega’s participation in the Atlanta Celebrates Photography month. The weekend is full of events and receptions, and I encourage you to visit our Chamber website for a complete list of activities, or stop by any of the venues (including Hummingbird Lane) and pick up a complete schedule. We’re excited to participate in this annual event by presenting new works of Jack Anthony. Jack’s incredible collection of North Georgia’s waterfalls are found in his book, Waterfalls of North Georgia, which can be purchased here at the gallery. But we haven’t seen the waterfalls look like this before! He has taken the collection and is presenting them in black and white. To complement his display, he has added color photographs of the green and golden yellow wheat and canola fields. Jack will be taking center stage, and we’ll be having a reception for him Saturday afternoon from 1-3. The show will be hanging until the end of the month. Also on the 4th, from 4-7, Jason and Lara, of Dahlonega, will be playing music on our stage. This wonderful duo specializes in string instruments, and Lara’s vocals will simply delight all who hear her. You may know Jason, formerly of Vintage Music – he and John have been known to pop into the gallery for an impromptu picking party, and we’re so excited to have them join us for some Saturday afternoon pickin’ October 11, 2008 will be an exciting day as well. Anne Amerson, of Dahlonega, will be joining us from 1-4 for a book signing and reception for her new book, “Dahlonega’s Gold.” This is Anne’s first book of fiction, and she will be reading at 2:00 p.m. Don’t miss this opportunity to meet one of Dahlonega’s finest historians, and hear her read! Saturday, October 18 2008 to Sunday, October 19 2008 - Gold Rush Days! Gold Rush Days are held the third weekend in October (the 18th and 19th for 2008), when thousands come to see fall colors peaking and celebrate Dahlonega's 1828 discovery of gold. Over 300 art and craft exhibitors gather around the Public Square and Historic District in support of this annual event, and it is estimated that a crowd of over 200,000 visit over the weekend to join in the fun and excitement! It has been voted one of the Top 20 Events in the Southeast by the Southeast Tourism Society. Included in the two day event are a parade, children's activities, a fashion show, gold panning contest, wheelbarrow race, King and Queen Coronation, hog calling, buck dancing contest, gospel singing and other live entertainment, wrist wrestling, and last but not least – some delicious food! October 31, 2008 – If you haven’t ever experienced Halloween in Dahlonega, you may want to come this year! Every year, merchants host one of the largest trick or treating events that I’ve ever seen! Thousands of little tiny goblins and ghosts converge on the Square and offer tricks for treats to participating merchants. I HOPE that I’m able to take a few photos this year – it’s an amazing event, but I’ve never stopped giving out candy long enough to take a picture! November is the beginning of our holiday festivities, so I’ll be sure to send you all a new schedule of events later in October! On a personal note, I would like to say “Godspeed!” to Deputy Matt Rice of the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Department. He is leaving this week to head to Iraq for his 4th tour of duty. Matt, Thank you, and please, come home soon! Ya’ll take care! I know times are tough right now, but you only have to look outside your window and know that the world is full of beautiful moments and things to enjoy. We’re only 60 miles North of Atlanta, and sometimes you just can’t afford to stay home – you need inspiration too! - Todd, Amy & Bonnie
