When the view is your paycheck
Saturday, 24 October 2009

When the view is your paycheck.... This morning I had the distinct pleasure of watching the wind. It was amazing. There is a field by our house with trees surrounding it, and the trees follow right into our back yard. I was sitting on our porch, and while the birds fed from their feeder, I sat in silence.

I was very much aware of the changes that Mother Earth is going through right now. I mowed the lawn and had it looking pristine just two days ago. I worked for 10 hours, and was very proud of the work I had done. I had absorbed the sunshine, had a bonfire, picked up sticks, blew leaves and mowed the grass. Todd immediately commented when he came in the door, and asked if I had worked all day. I said that I had. In the morning light, you could not tell that I had done anything.

So this morning it was with a certain calmness that only comes with the acceptance of things that I cannot control, so I have learned to enjoy, that I watched as the wind blew through a tree in our neighbors yard. The leaves on the tree in our yard were behaving themselves quite nicely, yet they did not move at all. I thought perhaps they were frigid and unresponsive to the wind, as our neighbors tree had leaves that were dancing and swaying and singing a song that only they could hear. I watched with fascination, as the dance they were doing reminded me of the brush stroke of an artist who is completely engrossed in their task, oblivious to all except for the music they are listening to, or the results of their movement.

Margret Von Keiser, happy at her easel...

As I pondered this observance, I was delighted when my tree began to move, and my tree began to dance. My tree was no longer frigid, and was completely touched by the music, the brush strokes. It danced and swayed, and leaves began to fly through the air. Even the hair on my head began to dance, and our beautiful chimes began to play. My tree has music that even I can hear, and it's beautiful. I feel sorry for my neighbors tree, who had suddenly quit dancing.

There must have been a break in the music, as all grew quiet again. At that moment, I saw that Mother Earth had painted my tree a beautiful red, mixed with yellows, greens and shades of brown.

It's finally fall. I've been waiting to write until I was able to see the color that attracts so many of our visitors to Hummingbird Lane. It's time, I thought.. time to send out my message that will hopefully lure you to come and visit us. Yesterday we were talking of allegories, and I have found mine. Hummingbird Lane has undergone a process much like the seasons, and its finally time for us to show the world that not only have we survived the hurricane that has been our economy, we have changed and the results are beautiful, clear and hopeful. The wind has blown through us, and the artists have used this time to produce beautiful paintings, pottery, scarves, photographs and more. We've used the wind to inspire us, and the results have been striking. We've only had our instincts, our lessons and our breath to move us forward - and of course, each other.

It's time for you to come now to Hummingbird Lane. You can see the wind there, as Cindy takes photos of puppies, children and playful people. You can see it when Margret paints the lovely images that only she can feel, but shares with others so they too can feel her wind. You can see it in Kathy's feet as she creates beautiful warmth in her scarves that are lighter than air. And you can see it in Leah's students eyes, as they too learn to feel the wind and create their own proof that God exists in the hands of an artist.

Maybe for the first time in my life, fall doesn't represent the beginning of my least favorite time of the year: winter. Perhaps I have finally learned, or accepted, the importance of the seasons, not only in reality, but also metaphorically. Last year I felt as if we may not make it through these rough times in the economy. Last year, it was dark in my head, and I was afraid and confused. This year I find the difference fascinating. I can see color, not just darkness. I can see light. Perhaps it's because of my new camera: I can see light, and color and possibility everywhere I look. Perhaps it's because of the support of our new resident artists, or the customers who make this decision a good one for them. Or Kathy's special orders for brides maid's scarves, or Margret selling a painting off her easel before they are even finished. Maybe it's the people signing up for classes with Leah and posing for Cindy in front of her camera. Maybe it's Jon's quiet and reassuring presence, or the lady who bought a print yesterday, his very first sale with us. I don't know… but I do know that it feels good at Hummingbird Lane, and it's getting better every day. Ideas are flowing, the holidays have been planned, and it isn't so quiet here anymore.

Won't you come and see what I'm talking about? Come and see the painting that Mother Earth is working on right now, and come and see how we, at Hummingbird Lane, are following her lead. Are you out there, fighting for your life? Or are you out there creating a life worth fighting for? There is so much beauty in our lives, and we want so much to share the wind with you!!!
