The Myth of the Unglazed Wine Cup
A young Potter, Samantha Horowitz, was approached in her pottery shop in Stuart, Florida by a woman with a small cup. The lady had borrowed her cup from a friend, who had explained that this cup was a special wine cup. The fact that the cup was unglazed on the inside is what made it special. “You see” said the lady, “the fact that the inside is unglazed makes it possible for me to drink wine. It absorbs the tannins so I don’t get a headache. And I want it small so that it will fit in my purse.” Samantha thought this was a wonderful story and decided she would make some wine cups for herself as well as for the lady. Samantha gave a cup to her sister, Amy, as a gift, as she was a new Potter and excited about her new found talents.
Amy, being the skeptic that she’s not, asked another potter from Hummingbird Lane if the story was true. He said that he was a biologist, and would check into it. Then Amy went to a Vineyard in Dahlonega, and asked them if the story was true. They said “Absolutely not! The wine would have to sit in the glass for months in order for the theory to actually work.”
Amy told Sam what the Vineyard and the biologist had said. Both agreed that it didn’t really matter if it was provable or not. They still liked the idea of their very own wine cup that fits in a purse. Samantha continued to make her wine cups. Amy, owner of Hummingbird Lane, became a potter, and here today is your very own wine cup to carry in your purse. It’s up to you whether or not you believe in its powers to prevent headaches, but Samantha and Amy believe it enough to share it with you.
